Google has hired its first women-only math and science department

The Google-owned company announced today that its math and technology department will be staffed exclusively by women.

Google, which has struggled to find women and minorities in its ranks, said the women will work as part of a research team, but they won’t be part of the team that develops products or research initiatives.

Google said it also added new female employees in the past year.

Google has faced scrutiny for its culture and for hiring women for its science and engineering jobs.

Google is a leading technology company with revenues of $5.9 trillion.
